Overview of Special Education
Authors: Jenna Lequia, Ph.D.
In 1975, the first federal policy related to educating students with disabilities was passed, the Education of All Handicapped Children Act. Since this time, several influential court cases and amendments have been made to the initial version of the law. The process of special education is quite complex and can be overwhelming for those new to the system. This module presents historical context related to the establishment of the field of special education, a detailed description of the process of special education, and an overview of members of educational teams, as well as teaming models often used when delivering the various special education services to students with disabilities.
